Akan Datang: Construction of Ho Chi Minh City’s metro might finally get a move on

Akan Datang: our contributors’ take on the stories to watch in Southeast Asia this week, curated by Regional Editor Aisyah Llewellyn.

Hello New Naratif readers and Happy New Year! We hope 2019 will bring with it good things for all of us, and we are looking forward to bringing you more coverage from around Southeast Asia throughout the year. We have a number of exciting developments planned here at New Naratif, including special coverage of events like the Indonesian elections. You can follow us on Twitter or Facebook to find out what we’re up to! We also have a new book which is an anthology of articles from our first year. You can buy it here.

Over at New Naratif this week we kicked off the new year with this piece on the local street art community in Chiang Mai. We also published this article that argues that the World Bank is failing to listen to grassroots voices within the region, despite its position as a source of support for local communities. Also new on the site this week, we have this piece on Indonesia’s draconian cyber law which is increasingly used to muffle student activism. And in case you missed it, members of the New Naratif team picked our top reads published on the site in 2018.
