Democracy Classroom: SOGIESC Equality
26 April @ 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm
New Naratif’s Democracy Classrooms are a safe space where our community can come together, articulate our thoughts, and practice democracy.
It’s been seven years since the SOGIE Equality Bill was filed, and still the fight against harassment and discrimination of LGBTQIA+ Filipinos continues. From the struggle for basic needs, to more visibility and legal protection, the quest for equality for the LGBTQIA+ community continues to be a challenge.
In our next Democracy Classroom, join us along with journalist Mavic Conde in understanding more about the struggle for SOGIESC equality and the challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community in the Philippines. How can we fight together for the safety, rights, and equality of the Filipino LGBTQIA+ community? And how does a better, more equal and inclusive Philippines look to you?
Read up more on the hardships faced by the LGBTQIA+ community in attaining legal protection 10 years post-Haiyan, or how this has always been a hard-fought battle in our podcast: Legal Rights for Haiyan’s LGBTQ Survivors.
Mavic Conde is a Filipino environmental journalist. Her bylines can be found in Bulatlat, Mongabay, and Rappler. She received an Earth Journalism Writing Grant as well as several fellowships, including a year-long fellowship at Solutions Journalism Network, where she commissioned and co-edited climate-solution stories from Asia.
