MFN Legal Briefing: The SIM Card Registration Act of the Philippines
31 May @ 3:30 pm - 5:30 pm
The Media Freedom Network (MFN) is a solidarity network for freedom of expression movements in Southeast Asia.
The SIM Registration Act 2022 of the Philippines was recently promulgated by the Congress of the Philippines amid backlash from human rights and civil society organisations, labour organisations, and media houses on the proposed reforms contained within the new legislation. SIM card registration, however, has become a norm in many countries, and the Philippines joins the ranks of all other countries in ASEAN in implementing some form of SIM card registration requirement within their borders.
Why is SIM registration such a problem for human rights and journalists in the Philippines and how can we as media practitioners protect ourselves from the risks associated with the new SIM registration law?
The Media Freedom Network (MFN) will be hosting the MFN Legal Briefing: The SIM Registration Act this Wednesday, May 31st in collaboration with Altermidya and Junk SIM Registration Network to answer your burning questions and to provide media practitioners with critical information and context in order to protect our fellow media practitioners in Southeast Asia.
