Pada Oktober tahun lalu, beberapa bulan selepas pengundi Malaysia menumbangkan koalisi politik yang memegang tampuk pemerintahan semenjak 1957, Liew Vui Keong, Menteri  di Jabatan Perdana Menteri, mengumumkan bahawa hukuman mati akan dimansuhkan sepenuhnya buat semua kesalahan di dalam negara.

Pada Januari 2019, di sebuah mesyuarat yang diulit emosi bersama ahli keluarga banduan hukuman mati, dia berkata, “Saya percaya jika kamu berasa membunuh adalah satu kesalahan, kamu tak mungkin akan menyokong jika kerajaan melakukannya.”
