Perkataan “pendatang” yang seolah senjata digunakan bagi merujuk bukan sahaja kepada kelompok migran yang lain, tetapi juga orang Malaysia yang bermastatautin di Semenanjung, dengan nada mencerca dan menghina. Dahulu perkataan neutral yang tiada maksud politik, pendatang berubah menjadi sinekdok—dengan maksud moden baharu—bermula dari penghujung 1970an dan 1980an. Kini, pendatang digunakan oleh ahli politik Malaysia sebagai peralatan menyisih dalam kerangka politik identiti. Makalah ini membentangkan bahawa terma ini semakin berpengaruh menurut peredaran masa, tetapi turut menganalisis cara kelompok-kelompok terjejas cuba menyangkal dan melawan penggunaan ini.

Meskipun saya dari latar belakang komuniti minoriti, saya mula mengenali etimologi perkataan pendatang berikutan interaksi dengan seorang wanita yang telah bergelar migran luar aturan di Malaysia seumur hidupnya.
