Promoting Peace Through Art

Heri Dono, one of Indonesia’s most seminal artists, was born and raised in the capital city of Jakarta. But, for him, Yogyakarta is home.

Known as the centre of music, dance and theatre, Yogyakarta is home to the country’s first art school, the prestigious Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI). Previously known as the Indonesian Fine Arts Academy (ASRI), the school was founded on 15 December 1949. Dono has taught visual art to postgraduate students there since 2016.

“Yogyakarta has changed. Today, it is not as peaceful as it was,” the 58-year-old says.
