New Naratif is launching its inaugural Sekolah Democracy. In this programme, participants will learn about the basic principles of democracy and how they apply to the Malaysian context. The programme is divided into two tiers:
- Tier 1 is an introduction to democratic principles.
- Tier 2 is a space to turn theory into practice, helping participants envision concrete ways to effect positive change in your community.

What happens in Tier 1?
In Tier 1, applicants may participate in up to six classes. The topics for Tier 1 are:
Free and Fair Elections
Checks and Balances
Transparency and Accountability
Majority Rule, Minority Rights
Freedom of Expression
Participants will receive material ahead of the class that introduces them to the topic. During the session, they will discuss the material they read/watched and hear from a guest speaker on the topic. Participants will have an opportunity for group discussion with peers and the guest lecturer. About the material Participants should come away from the session with an understanding of the concept discussed and avenues for further independent research.
Who can apply to Tier 1?
People based in Malaysia who are 18 at the time of application can apply.
When are Tier 1 classes scheduled?
A class on each theme will be held twice every month on Saturdays from 2 – 4 pm MYT from March to August. Participants may only come to one of the two classes on each theme.
- 06 March & 20 March: Free and Fair Elections with Wong Chin Huat
- 10 April & 24 April: Checks and Balances with Firdaus Husni
- 08 May & 22 May: Transparency and Accountability with YB Rajiv Rishyakaran
- 12 June and 26 June: Self Determination with Vila Somiah
- 10 July & 24 July: Majority Rule, Minority Rights with Khoo Ying Hooi
- 14 August & 28 August: Freedom of Expression with Norman Goh
Is there a difference between the two classes on the same topic, for example, Free and Fair Elections on 6 March and 20 March?
No, the content is the same. We are providing two classes per topic to maximise the number of people who can attend. Please only apply for one class on each topic.
What happens in Tier 2?
The objective of Tier 2 is for participants to create a campaign for a democratic principle they would like to see in action. Participants who attended at least TWO Tier 1 classes will have the opportunity to apply to attend Tier 2 classes. In Tier 2, participants will learn about how democratic principles were put into practice through three case studies. Participants will then work in groups to create a campaign for a participating civil society organisation that will be presented at the final class.
When are Tier 2 classes scheduled?
Tier 2 classes begin in September and end in November.

How much does it cost?
This programme is 100% free this year. In future years, there may be a fee charged for attendance.
Anything else I should know before signing up?
Due to the limited number of slots available, please only apply to the classes you are most interested in and at times you are sure you can attend. If you are unable to attend a class, please notify us at least 24 hours before the class starts. To be fair to all who wish to attend, signing up but not attending a class will disqualify you from future classes.
