Principles of Democracy: Majority Rules, Minority Rights Event Recap
Welcome to Community Corner, a space for our members to catch up on events that they have missed, read team recommendations, and write to us!
On October 13, 2023, New Naratif hosted an event as part of our Principles of Democracy series of articles with our special guest Robert Hii from the Society for Equality, Respect, and Trust for All (SERATA) Democracy is often reduced to an exercise of majoritarianism. But in ethnically and culturally diverse Southeast Asia, how should democracy be exercised? Is it truly always a simple principle of “majority rules”?
We wanted to explore Southeast Asian democracy within this event, Principles of Democracy: Majority Rule, Minority Rights, along with our guest, by zooming into Malaysia, MA63, and how democracy should protect all, including those in the periphery of society.
